My Hero Academia dub includes Looney Tunes reference

In the world of anime localization, it’s not uncommon for the English dub to take some creative liberties with the original script. Sometimes these changes are made to better match lip flaps or to make the dialogue sound more natural in English. Other times, it’s to add in a joke or pop culture reference that will resonate with American audiences.

Such was the case in the English dub of My Hero Academia’s sixth season. In the first episode, “A Quiet Beginning,” there’s a brief encounter between the Rabbit Hero Mirko and Dr. Kyudai Garaki, one of All For One’s top scientists. In the original Japanese release of the anime, Mirko simply asks the doctor, “Are you the real one?” referring to an imposter that appeared earlier in the episode.

But whoever was in charge of the My Hero Academia dub’s script saw an opportunity to add a little humor to the scene. They changed Mirko’s line to, “What’s up, Doc? I’m guessing you’re the real one!” This line is a reference to Bugs Bunny, who is known for greeting people with the same phrase.

The addition of this reference not only adds a little levity to the scene, but it also helps to sell the dub to American audiences. Fans of Looney Tunes will no doubt appreciate the nod to the classic cartoon character, and it’s a fun way to inject a bit of pop culture into the show. It just goes to show that sometimes even the smallest changes can make a big impact on the overall viewing experience.
