According to Deadline, Halia Abdel-Meguid has been chosen to write the script for Netflix’s live-action adaptation of the popular anime series Death Note. Abdel-Meguid is a Japanese speaker and has spent time living in Tokyo, in addition to being a long-time fan of the anime.
The series, which is in production under The Duffer Brothers’ production company, Upside Down, will follow the story of Light, a high school student who discovers a mysterious notebook that can kill anyone whose name is written inside it. Light decides to use this power for good by eliminating hardened criminals, while a team of law enforcement officers tries to stop the unknown killer.
Several producers of the 2017 live-action film adaptation, including Dan Lin and Roy Lee as executive producers, as well as Jonathan Eirich and Miri Yoon as co-exec producers, are also on board for the upcoming series. The 2017 film starred Nat Wolff as Light and Willem Dafoe as Ryuk, and while it received mixed reviews, it was praised for Dafoe’s performance as the death god Ryuk.
In addition to Death Note, Abdel-Meguid has also partnered with The Duffer Brothers for their upcoming adaptation of Stephen King’s The Talisman. Fans of the anime are eagerly anticipating the live-action adaptation, which promises to be faithful to the source material while adding its own unique twist.
