The long-awaited premiere of the third season of “Demon Slayer” finally arrived on TV on Sunday. The show’s production company, Ufotable, made the decision to air the season on TV after the success of “Mugen Train,” which became a huge hit in theaters. As someone who hasn’t read ahead in the manga and doesn’t watch much anime, I am excited to see the show return with its amazing animation.
The first episode introduces Muzan, who is scolding the Upper Rank demons for their incompetence after losing one of their own. This is our first look at the remaining Upper Rank demons, which include Doma, Akaza, Hatengu, Gyokko, and Kokushibou. Kokushibou is the main focus of the episode and appears to be the great mystery of the season. Tanjuro has a dream about him in human form, where he’s staying with him in the future once Tanjiro has a child. Later, Tanjiro sees him at Swordsmith village talking to the Mist Hashira. Given his outfit and Sun Breathing earrings, it seems he has a direct link to Tanjiro. It’s possible that he might secretly be Tanjiro’s “real” father or lost older brother, or even Tanjiro from the future.
The episode also has a lighthearted portion, with Tanjiro waking from his coma after two months and everyone celebrating his return. The episode’s most memorable moment involves Mitsuri Kanroji, the Love Hashira, who first appears during a 1:1 manga panel translation where she rises from a hot spring completely nude and runs at Tanjiro. While Demon Slayer has featured fan service before, this moment was particularly prominent and quickly became a viral GIF on social media.
Overall, the premiere sets up several storylines for the upcoming season, including Tanjiro’s quest to get a new sword from a surly blacksmith who has gone missing and his mission to find some sort of hidden power in Swordsmith Village. The Mist Hashira and Love Hashira will also play a prominent role this season, and two main demons on the way are Gyokko and Hantengu. With so many mysteries and plotlines in the mix, fans are eagerly anticipating what’s to come in the rest of the season.
