The Swordsmith Village Arc in Demon Slayer season 3 is a highly anticipated continuation of the story that brings back beloved characters like Tanjiro, Inosuke, Zenitsu, Hashiras, and Demons. While the story of Demon Slayer is usually straightforward and easy to follow, the first episode of this arc may be challenging to understand for some viewers.
After an intense battle in the Entertainment District, Tanjiro and his friends were left in a coma for a prolonged period of time. During this time, Tanjiro had a vivid vision of Yoriichi Tsugikuni, the legendary Demon Slayer who effortlessly defeated Muzan, the powerful demon that had terrorized humanity for centuries. In this vision, Tanjiro saw someone who looked like his future self, but it was not him – it was a man named Sumiyoshi.
Sumiyoshi is an ancestor of the Kamado family and is shown to have many similarities with Tanjiro, including physical and personality traits. He has a striking resemblance to Tanjiro, except for the scar on the latter’s face. Sumiyoshi’s appearance and clothing are also similar to Tanjiro’s, wearing a white nagajuban with a short, black-checkered kimono over it, similar to Tanjiro’s haori, and light tobi pants. He completes his ensemble with white zori with red straps, opting not to wear any tabi socks.
Aside from their physical similarities, Sumiyoshi’s personality traits mirror those of Tanjiro. In the brief memory fragment that Tanjiro had of his ancestor, Sumiyoshi is depicted as a person with outstanding moral values, displaying traits like generosity, humbleness, and keeping a bright smile on his face. This similarity between the two further adds depth to Tanjiro’s character, emphasizing how his admirable traits are not just a product of his upbringing but also a part of his family’s legacy.
Sumiyoshi is a highly skilled swordsman who learned to use the Sun Breathing technique by closely watching Yoriichi performing and practicing it for years. He memorized and practiced all the techniques under Yoriichi’s guidance, making him one of the few people who mastered this technique. The Sun Breathing technique is passed down through generations in the Kamado family, alongside the Hanafuda Earrings. Tanjiro is the last one to have been passed down Hinokami Kagura from his father.
To pass down the Sun Breathing technique, a ritual ceremony is performed that involves offering a dance to the Fire God from sunset to sunrise. This dance consists of twelve segments, repeated throughout the night until dawn to ward off threats and diseases. The breathing technique used in the Hinokami Kagura allows the user to dance tirelessly without ever exhausting themselves as if they can continue dancing forever.
In the series, Sumiyoshi is shown to have a newborn child whose identity remains a mystery, but fans speculate that he could be Tanjiro’s father. However, that’s not the case as Yoriichi and Sumiyoshi lived hundreds of years before Tanjiro and his father, Tanjuru. Sumiyoshi’s wife, Suyako, and daughter, Sumire, are also introduced in the first episode of the Swordsmith Village Arc.
The introduction of Sumiyoshi and his connection to Tanjiro adds another layer to the already complex story of Demon Slayer. It emphasizes the importance of family and legacy in the series and showcases the depth of the world-building that the creators have achieved. Overall, the Swordsmith Village Arc promises to be an exciting and emotional continuation of the story that fans of the series are eagerly anticipating.
