Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, the popular manga and anime series, ended after 205 chapters, leaving fans feeling a mix of sadness and satisfaction. The finale offered a glimpse into the hopeful future that Tanjiro and his friends fought for, giving readers a sense of closure and the satisfaction of seeing the characters they’ve come to love achieve their goals.
The final chapters came in two parts: chapter 204 and chapter 205. Chapter 204 focused on the aftermath of the series’ final confrontation with Muzan Kibutsuji, where the survivors reunited and celebrated their victory. Meanwhile, chapter 205 looked decades into the future, introducing a new generation of characters that are the reincarnations or descendants of the series’ beloved characters.
Chapter 204 picked up three months after Muzan’s defeat, showing Tanjiro recovering from his near-transformation into a demon. While he survived, his left arm and right eye were permanently damaged, a lasting effect from his transformation. During Tanjiro’s recovery, Kiriya Ubuyashiki, the current leader of the Demon Slayers Corps, held a final Hashira meeting to disband the organization. After several heartfelt reunions, Tanjiro, Nezuko, Zenitsu, and Inosuke headed to the Kamado family home, with the chapter ending on an image of modern-day Japan.
Chapter 205, titled “Life Shining Across the Years,” was a time skip that introduced a new generation of characters. Yoshiteru, Zenitsu’s great-grandchild, read a book titled “The Legend of Zenitsu” and discussed the idea of reincarnation with his sister Toko, saying that “everyone who fought demons and died for a peaceful world was reborn into a happier life.” This hopeful thought established the backbone of the final chapter, as readers met the many descendants and reincarnations of their favorite characters.
Kanata and Sumihiko Kamado were the first to be introduced, with their appearances making it clear that they were Kanao and Tanjiro, respectively. The chapter contained numerous nods to other characters’ reincarnations, with former Hashiras Uzui, Kanae, Shinobu, Himejima, Tokito, Iguro, and Kanroji all making cameos during the trio’s journey to school.
The chapter showcased the lives of the reincarnations or descendants of the series’ beloved characters. Uzui won a gold medal for Japan in gymnastics, honoring his lineage as a shinobi. Kanae and Shinobu attended Sekirei Women’s Academy, Himejima became a kindergarten teacher, and Tokito was seen with his twin as two babies in a stroller. As Toko and Kanata discussed what to do after school, they mentioned visiting a diner run by Iguro and Kanroji, meaning the two got their wish of being together in another life.
The chapter also introduced new characters, such as Inosuke’s descendant/reincarnation, botanist Aoba Hashibira, who discovered the Blue Spider Lily, the flower Muzan believed would grant him the perfect immortal body. Yushiro, still alive, was known as a mysterious artist who paints beautiful portraits of Tamayo. Even the swordsmith Haganezuka and rank-and-file members of the Demon Slayer Corps, like Murata and Goto, made small cameos.
As Sumihiko and Tojuro continued running to school, and away from the Shinazugawa siblings, Tojuro tried to convince Sumihiko to join the Kendo club. Although the two make it to school in time, Sumihiko’s mother received a phone call, notifying her of what her son did. As she speaks on the phone, we see Tanjiro’s sword, earrings, and a photo of all those who assisted and survived in the great battle against Muzan, whose defeat brought about the bright future they always hoped for.
It’s a heartwarming and nostalgic scene that pays tribute to all the characters who fought and sacrificed so much for the betterment of the world. The sight of Tanjiro’s sword, earrings, and the photo serves as a reminder of the legacy of all those who came before, and the hope they had for the future.
The ending of Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba left fans with a feeling of satisfaction and closure. The story had come full circle, with the promise of a brighter future for all the characters who fought for it. It’s a testament to the power of hope and perseverance, and the bonds of family and friendship that can overcome even the darkest of trials.
As fans say goodbye to the world of Demon Slayer, they can take solace in the fact that the legacy of Tanjiro and his friends lives on, in the hearts of those who loved the series and the hope it brought them.
