In Demon Slayer, the introduction of the Upper Four demon Hantengu has challenged one of the series’ most foundational rules: the only two ways to kill a demon are exposing them to sunlight or chopping off their head with a Nichirin sword. However, Hantengu has proven that at least one of these methods is not always effective.
Despite his initial appearance as a weak and sniveling creature, Hantengu manages to outsmart the seasoned Demon Slayer, Mist Hashira Muichiro Tokito, with his incredible regenerative abilities. After Tokito beheads Hantengu with a perfectly executed strike from his Nichirin sword and Mist Breathing technique, the demon’s head and body both regenerate into two new demons, leaving Tanjiro and his allies shocked and confused.
This is not a one-time occurrence, as the same thing happens again when Hantengu is struck once more. The fact that Hantengu can survive beheading and regenerate into multiple demons raises questions about how he has managed to acquire such abilities and how to defeat him. With the fate of the world at stake, Tanjiro and his companions must act quickly to figure out Hantengu’s secret before it’s too late.
The situation is further complicated by the fact that Hantengu is not alone, and the Upper-Rank Five demon Gyokko has yet to make an appearance. If Tanjiro and his allies cannot find a way to defeat Hantengu, the village may be flooded with demons, putting an end to Nichirin blades and the Demon Slayer Corps.
Despite their best efforts, the solution to defeating Hantengu remains elusive. While holding out until sunrise is an option, the demons still have plenty of time to cause destruction before then. Additionally, it’s unclear if Hantengu’s survival is due to some kind of trick or if he possesses a unique ability that sets him apart from other demons.
With so much at stake, Tanjiro and his friends must use all their resources and knowledge to uncover the secret of Hantengu’s regeneration and find a way to defeat him before it’s too late.
