Halia Abdel-Meguid, a talented writer and producer, has been chosen to work on the development of a live-action series adaptation of Death Note, a popular Japanese manga and anime series that has garnered a massive following over the years. This series is being produced by Netflix, which has already made a film adaptation of the story in 2017.
As revealed by Deadline in July, Death Note is one of the many projects under the development slate of Upside Down, a production company owned by the creators of Stranger Things, Matt & Ross Duffer. Abdel-Meguid, who has previously worked on another Upside Down Pictures development project for Netflix, will serve as the writer and executive producer of the series.
Abdel-Meguid is a longtime fan of the Death Note series and has even lived in Tokyo, where she had the opportunity to learn Japanese. Her previous experience working with the Duffers has given her the knowledge and expertise to bring the story of Death Note to life in a compelling and exciting way.
The original Death Note storyline follows a teenage boy named Light Yagami who gains supernatural powers over life and death after discovering a black notebook. The notebook, which is dropped by a rogue Shinigami (a supernatural being that takes the souls of the dying), allows him to kill anyone whose name he writes in it. Light becomes intoxicated with power and decides to cleanse the world of undesirables, while a law enforcement team tries to stop him.
The new series promises to be an entirely new take on the original IP, offering a fresh perspective on the story that will appeal to both longtime fans of the series and new viewers. Several producers of the 2017 movie adaptation will also be attached to the project, including Dan Lin and Roy Lee as executive producers, and Jonathan Eirich and Miri Yoon as co-executive producers.
Aside from Death Note, Abdel-Meguid is also involved in the upcoming adaptation of The Devil in the White City on Hulu. Her journey as a writer and producer began after she started out as an actress and musician in London. She later turned to screenwriting and graduated from AFI (American Film Institute) in 2018.
Abdel-Meguid is represented by Rain, Paradigm, and Jackoway Austen Tyerman, and her work on Death Note promises to be an exciting addition to her already impressive body of work.
