In the world of Demon Slayer, humans face powerful and elevated demons in combat, and in order to match their strength and abilities, they use concentrated breathing forms known as “Breathing Styles”. These breathing styles are based on different elements, and each style has multiple forms that act as the demon slayer’s special moves. Sun Breathing was the first breathing style introduced in the series, and it has since evolved to take on different elements as new users develop their own unique styles.
The main elemental breathing styles were created from Sun Breathing, with a few smaller and unique ones being further created from the main elemental forms. Mist Breathing is one of the unique breathing forms, which was derived from Wind Breathing. It focuses on quick attacks that attempt to overwhelm an enemy’s senses, making them easier targets as they lose track of the Demon Slayer. This style mimics mist, seemingly creating a haze over the battleground that the user is able to blend into and hide their exact location from the enemy.
Mist Breathing is not one of the main elemental breathing forms, but it is a significant style used by Muchiro, The Mist Hashira, who is the only known user of this breathing form. Muchiro wears large loose-fitting clothes into battle to further obscure his body and the moves he’s making, adding to the difficulty of following his movements from the mist breathing techniques. Despite being very young and small compared to the other Hashira, his mastery of Mist Breathing makes him an extremely difficult target to hit.
There are six known Mist Breathing forms, with Muchiro creating a seventh form unique to himself. Each of these forms focuses on moving fast and attacking with swift strikes to catch the enemy off guard. The first form is called “Low Clouds, Distant Haze,” which is a fast and powerful thrust forward. The second form is “Eight-Layered Mist,” in which the user unleashes eight swift slashes at an incredible speed. The third form is “Scattering Mist Splash,” which creates a barrier to block incoming projectiles. The fourth form is “Shifting Flow Slash,” in which the user dashes towards their enemy, unsheathing their sword to slash at the enemy incredibly fast. The fifth form is “Sea Of Clouds And Haze,” in which the user unleashes a flurry of attacks over a wide range, obscuring their position and the areas they are attacking. The sixth form is “Lunar Dispersing Mist,” in which the user backflips into the air, attacking with many slashes from above. Finally, the seventh form, “Obscuring Clouds,” is unique to Muchiro, and he appears to be moving slowly to his opponent, disappearing into a mist that covers a wide area, reappearing to catch his opponent off guard.
